Illegal Asbestos Removal Lands Construction Company Owner In Federal Prison.

Because of the scientifically established link between asbestos and mesothelioma, as well as other deadly diseases, there are numerous regulations governing its use, the goal being to decrease incidents of exposure as much as possible. Accordingly, construction companies and other building maintenance organizations must be careful to strictly adhere to these regulations. For one, the safety of their employees should be a priority. Second, violation of such regulations can have major consequences. If you or a loved one is injured due to asbestos exposure, it would be wise to contact an expert asbestos injury attorney at 617-787-3700.

After conducting an operation to remove asbestos from a local Illinois middle school, Joe Kehrer, owner of Kehrer Brothers Construction, was sentenced to five months in federal prison and fined $50,000 for failing to notify the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency about the presence and removal of asbestos. Reports indicate that Kehrer led a team of Mexican workers, very few of whom spoke English or understood they were to be exposed to deadly carcinogens, into the middle  school and began the asbestos removal.

Kehrer’s misrepresentations were exposed when one of his employees contacted the Occupational Safety and Health Administration with concerns about the project, noting that the health and safety of the employees were at stake. When OSHA arrived on the scene, Kehrer allegedly had his employees hide the equipment and lie about the operations.
