Two construction site workers died after a 16-floor building collapsed on Friday March 29 in Tanzania’s economic capital of Dar es Salaam. Rescue operations are under way to retrieve others trapped beneath the rubble.
According to Tanzanian authorities, dozens of people were working in and around the building when it collapsed just before 9:00 a.m. local time on Friday. The building had been under construction in recent weeks.
Local officials have expressed fear that many people may still be trapped beneath the building’s rubble, including children that may have been playing nearby. Residents of the area have been working with emergency crews to extricate those trapped. So far 19 people have been rescued.
The two men confirmed dead at this time were part of the construction team working on the building at the time of its collapse. Two others sustained life-threatening personal injuries and are in serious condition at local hospitals.
Dar es Salaam regional commissioner, Saidi Mecky Sadiky, estimates that nearly 60 people could have been in the area of the building when it collapsed, including food vendors, construction workers and children.
