Construction jobs are some of the most difficult and dangerous jobs in the U.S.  There are a wide variety of reasons for this, including the heavy machinery used and the frequent hazardous work environments.  Crush injuries and fall injuries are common on construction sites, especially in confined, urban settings. Sometimes construction accidents lead to severe bodily harm that may cause long-term health issues for workers.  In the very worst of cases, these accidents may even lead to a wrongful death.

On Monday, November 3, 2014, a construction worker was killed in Jersey City, New Jersey after a tape measure fell 50 stories and hit him in the head.  The victim was 58-year-old Gary Anderson from Somervale, New Jersey.  He was at the construction site of a new skyscraper on Columbus Drive, and was delivering drywall for his employer, Jangho Curtain Wall Company.  As Mr. Anderson was hauling the drywall out of his truck and into the building, a tape measure  was dropped 50 stories from the toolbelt of another worker and hit Anderson on the head.  He was not wearing his protective helmet at the time.  It was then in his truck.  Sadly, the impact of the metal tape measure caused severe head trauma and killed Mr. Anderson.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration still investigating Mr. Anderson’s death, and also is examining documents from the three companies involved in the construction of the Jersey City skyscraper.
