Three Construction Workers Injured As Roof Collapses At Boston Job Site.

The roof of a 33 story building under construction on the edge of Boston’s Chinatown and Downtown Crossing districts collapsed from the 12th to 5th floors on Thursday, March 20, 2014, injuring three construction workers.  The workers were taken to nearby Tufts Medical Center and none of their injuries are believed to be life threatening, but the incident is under investigation by federal workplace safety officials.

The roof of the 33 story residential tower that is currently under construction by John Moriarty & Associates for AvalonBay Communities, Inc. collapsed Thursday, resulting in what is called a pancake reaction, where floors fall atop one another.  Three construction workers were injured in the collapse, two with minor injuries and one with a serious head wound, but none of the injuries appear life threatening at this time.  There were about 120 other workers in the 45 Stuart Street structure when the collapse occurred at 8:00 am on Thursday.  It is uncertain which floor the injured workers were working on when the roof collapsed.

Inspectors from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the city, and the state are examining the building and OSHA will investigate the incident to determine the cause.  According to Michael Roberts, AvalonBay’s senior vice president of development, AvalonBay is “fully cooperating with the Fire Department investigation and are in contact with representatives of OSHA.”  The 33 story residential tower was expected to be completed in mid-2015.
